About Toulon
The military weaponry and enormous arsenal of Toulon can be dated back over five hundred years, and, incredibly, is still used by the people of France today. There are around ten kilometres’ worth of quays, the arsenal itself stretching to over two-hundred and sixty hectares. Twelve thousand people are in employment within this area, so it’s a huge part of Toulon’s culture. If you visit the town in the summer, make sure go on a boat tour. They leave from the marina and a tour guide will tell you all about the fascinating history.
If you’re not tired of military and maritime history after your tour, head down to the National Naval Museum of Toulon. The entrance to the building is worth a trip in itself; the arsenal door dates back to the eighteenth century and has four impressive columns.
But Toulon has even more to offer. Once you’re finished with the history of the town, take a trip to the fascinating Museum of Photography and the Museum of Asian Art. The former has some incredible displays, including works from such photographers as Henri Cartier Bresson and Man Ray.
Another great way to spend a sunny afternoon is to take a stroll around Toulon’s old town. Here you’ll find the cathedral, an imposing building well worth a visit. It’s also a great idea to take a wander around the Provençal market on Cours Lafayette. The market is on every morning, and is a hub of scents and sights traditional to Toulon.
If you time your trip right, you might even catch the annual Toulon Jazz Festival, which takes place in July over the space of one week. All of the concerts during the week are free to enter, and the town becomes a hub of excitement. If music isn’t your thing, then try timing your visit to coincide with the Bacchus Festival in March. This famous food and wine festival is a great way to pick up some local produce.
