About Nice
The best way to get a feel for Nice is to go for a walk along the Promenade des Anglais. It was built in the nineteenth century by the English, hence the name. The English used to spend their summers in Nice, so it was built by and for them, and is still used by tourists today. In all, its length measures seven kilometres along the Bay of Angels, and it’s a great way to take in the sea air and all Nice has to offer. Locals and tourists alike take to the promenade for walking, running, or roller-skating. Lined with palm trees, you’ll see the sandy beaches, and on the street side, there are a number of palaces that were also built in the nineteenth century, such as the Negresco.
It’s also a direct route to take if you’re looking for Nice’s old port, which is a great place to explore in the afternoon. You can also take a wander around the old town, famed for its Italian-style buildings and streets. It’s incredibly colourful, and offers tourists some wonderful little private boutiques and galleries to while the hours away in.
Nice is also famed for its bustling art scene. Over the centuries, Nice has produced some fine artists, and many painters have spent time there due to the weather, the quality of the air, and the quality of the light. If art floats your boat, take a trip to the National Chagall Museum, or the Matisse Museum, full of the respective artist’s work.
If you love to wander around local markets, make sure you spend some time in the Cours Saleya square. On Mondays, there is a gorgeous flea market where you can spend hours haggling over the price of bric-a-brac. On every other day of the week, the market is overflowing with flowers and vegetables.
