About Grenoble

If its culture and history that inspire you when choosing your holiday destination, look no further. Grenoble had a rich history. One of the main tourist attractions in the city is the Basilica of Sacré Cour, which can be found near to the train station. It was constructed between 1817 and 1924, and is a great place to go for cultural snapshots. There are 25 enormous paintings on the walls by religious art painter Marie Adomi Israël, and a statue of Christ made of stone, which was sculpted in 1942 by Emile Gilioli.

For architecture, try a visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady. Notre Dame Cathedral's earliest parts date back to the tenth Century. It was completed in the thirteenth century, and adapted in the nineteenth, but it maintains its original integrity, including the vaults, chancel, and towers.

For a bit of a cultural injection, spend an afternoon in the Dauphinois museum wandering around some excellent exhibitions. This fascinating building is, in itself, worth a visit. It was Sainte-Marie-d'en-Haut's convent, and still has an exceptionally beautiful baroque-style chapel. Another great museum to visit is the Musée de Grenoble, which can be found in the centre of the city. Unlike the Dauphinois museum, the museum of Grenoble is in a much more modern building, and houses some more contemporary exhibitions.

However, one of the main things to visit during your stay in Grenoble is the Fortress of the Bastille. Dating back to medieval times, the Bastille Mountain is an incredible example of the system of defence put in place to protect the city. Nowadays, it is also a museum for the largest collection of military constructions from the nineteenth century. And as it's so high up, you'll see some phenomenal views of Grenoble and the mountains.
