About Dijon

One of the main sights to see during your stay is the Clémenceau Park. If you are the outdoorsy type, this is definitely worth an afternoon's trip for a bit of peace and quiet. The gardens are quite modern, designed only in the 1980s, but they are vast, covering over 5,500 square metres of land. The park itself lies amid urban life, so it's massively popular with people working in the business quarter looking to take a quiet lunch.

However, if you crave the history and culture of Dijon, you'll be more interested in the Cathedral. It dates back to the early 1200s, when construction began. But it was such a large project that it was not completed until the late 1300s. The title of 'Cathedral' was officially given to this former church after the French Revolution. The interior is spectacular, but make sure you explore the crypt of Saint Benignus, which is 1000 years old.

Another great idea is to explore the Archaeological Museum. Parts of the building were a Benedictine monastery, and so it is littered with relics dating from prehistoric eras to the Middle Ages. Items on display give visitors a fascinating insight into the history of man from the Burgundy region.

For more culture, spend an afternoon whiling away time in the Fine Arts Museum. Dijon's is actually the largest in France, so there's no better place to be if fine arts are your interest. The building used to be the home of the dukes of burgundy, so that alone is worth a visit. There are a great number of classic paintings, as well as a more contemporary assortment. But make sure you stop off at the tombs belonging to Jean sans Peur and Philippe le Hardi.
