About Chambéry

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Chambéry is the castle of the dukes of Savoy. It is a group of buildings that were eventually connected from the middle ages to present day. It was here that the dukes and counts of Savoy lived and did their work. Nowadays, it is home to the General Council and the Prefecture. There are a variety of architecture styles throughout the castle, due to it being built across a number of centuries. From the fourteenth century are the lower rooms, the semi-round tower, and the treasury tower. The chapel was built in the fifteenth century. It's definitely a place to visit for its rich history.

Another great tourist attraction is the local cathedral, the Saint-François de Sales, which also dates back to the fifteenth century. However, it was not officially deigned a cathedral until the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century, the cathedral was renovated, and a great number of frescoes were added. The series itself covers around 6000 square metres, making it the largest in Europe, so definitely worth a trip.

Another cultural attraction in Chambéry is the Charmettes Museum, which is famed for being the residence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau between the years of 1736 and 1742. The garden is particularly lovely in summer. If you're a fan of his work, it's a wonderful place to spend a few hours. The rooms completely evoke the life and works of this great man.

For an attraction a little more technical and scientific, try a trip to the Galerie Eurêka. Spread over four rooms, the museum is dedicated to interactive games and models and educational displays on science.
