About Chalons-en-Champagne
Châlons Cathedral is one of the main tourist spots in Chalons-en-Champagne. Its full name is the Saint-Etienne de Châlons-en-Champagne cathedral, and it was built between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries. Since it's beginnings, the cathedral has been rebuilt a number of times due to fire damage, but what remains today is still a spectacular piece of architecture, with combinations of Baroque, Gothic, and Roman styles. It's definitely one for the budding photographer. Another tourist spot is the Garinet Museum, which contains a wide variety of interesting historical artefacts. Jules Garinet's house and collections were donated to the city in the late eighteen hundreds on the condition that they would be untouched. Nowadays, this glorious museum sees many visitors come though its doors each year to view the collections, which include ninety-eight preserved models of French monuments which were sculpted from wood by Mohen.
For something a bit more 'outdoorsy', try a trip to Les Jards, the gardens in Chalons-en-Champagne. The gardens date back to the twelfth century, when they were in fact a simple meadow that flooded regularly, called Pré-le-Vidame. However, a canal was built across the land in the fifteenth century to divide the meadow, creating two gardens, aptly named the Small Garden and the Large Garden. An additional garden was added in the eighteenth century (called the English Garden), and that is what stands today. Due to storm damage, the gardens were restored between 1999 and 2004, but they maintain a great deal of their original integrity. They are so famed that they were officially named as historical monuments in 1929, so they are definitely worth an afternoon's wandering.
